Hi Reader, Our International Women’s Soiree isn’t a big money-maker, but that was never the goal. Even though it’s always a lot of work, Hazel and I keep running the event because it keeps us connected to the bigger picture and why we started Drio in the first place. Plus, it’s a blast. Each time we run it, I can expect our wonderful keynote speakers will light us up with their words of wisdom, and that I’ll have fun connecting with new and familiar faces. Each year also always brings an unexpected moment or two. (Anyone else remember the catering fiasco of 2024…?) This year’s unexpected moment happened when we were doing a giveaway using a gift from one of our sponsors. I jumped up on stage to do a ticket draw as the event was winding down, thinking it would be a 30-second announcement. After I called the winning ticket, a woman from the audience stepped forward with a big smile and said she wanted to give something away too. “Of course!” I said. “Come on up!” I drew the ticket for the second lucky winner when another person came up with something to give away. And then another. And another. At least four or five people decided to donate gifts, as I stood there with a grin plastered on my face. It was this lovely moment of generosity that just naturally unfolded because of one person’s actions. That’s usually how it goes, isn’t it? When one person makes the move or says the words that matter, the kindness becomes contagious. It’s easier for others to follow suit. It happens every day, in our personal lives and in business. You don’t always have to make big, dramatic gestures or shout your values from the rooftops. Sometimes you just have to be the first one to make the signal. When you do that consistently, in your marketing, on your website, or the events you attend, people who share those values find you. Sometimes, they step forward too. At Drio, we talk a lot about bringing your values into your marketing, and, yes, there’s the “self-serving” business side of that. But beyond that, you might also start a kindness domino effect. By raising your hand and saying, “these are the values and acts of kindness we believe in…” you could inspire another business owner to act on theirs too. If you’ve been sitting on a value or a cause you care about but haven’t spoken out loud, just remember, you don’t know who’s watching, waiting for someone to go first.

Hi Reader, I’m about to start the last class of my MBA. It’s crazy to think that, 21 months after it all kicked off, I’ll officially be graduated in May. As I’m gearing up for the last push, I’ve been thinking about the tennis player, Mirra Andreeva. There’s this thing she does when she wins a tournament that I never see anyone else do. First, she thanks her family, coaches, and opponents. Then she thanks herself. Here’s a snippet from that speech: “I know what I have been dealing with, and I...
Hi Reader, The website world is full of jargon. If you’re trying to get a new website up and running, I don’t blame you if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Even just finding the right “type” of website team can be confusing, so I wanted to give you a little primer. Essentially, website teams usually land in one of two camps: Camp 1: Designers who build websites They typically lead with aesthetics, offer branding support, and create gorgeous-looking websites. That said, they tend to have less...
Hi Reader, The transition from holiday hibernation to the sprint of the new year never fails to amaze me. How are we already over a week into February?? It can be daunting to picture all the goals you have for the year when that sprint starts. Sometimes I feel like I’m grasping for a pause button as I start to wonder how we’ll ever make the time. When that feeling hits, the thing that keeps me grounded is remembering that we have core systems ticking along nicely in the background. I could...
