Hi Reader, Here’s something I didn’t anticipate when we first started Drio… Some people did not take us seriously. They thought it was “cute” that we were a couple of moms starting a business. They assumed it was a little side project to keep us busy between packing lunches and doing school pick-ups. We knew we were all-in on building something larger than us, but we wanted everyone to believe it too. So, for a while, we downplayed the fact that we were moms. We hid our minivans around the corner when we met clients in person. We didn’t talk about our families or what our kids were up to. That's not the case anymore. Maybe it was building confidence and gaining experience. Maybe it was the fact that everyone had kids running around in the background of their Zoom calls during COVID. But eventually, we decided we were done hiding the minivans. We started to embrace the fact that we’re a mom-owned business (and women-owned and minority owned). By doing so, we found more and more business owners who see those things as a benefit—a clue that we were the team for them. Now, some of our clients seek us out because they want our perspective as women or mothers. For example, our clients in STEM and the trades want to bring that viewpoint into their historically male-dominated fields so they can speak to more women. That’s what it’s like to find the right team—the ones with the expertise, values, or fresh viewpoint you’re missing. Or the team that will say, “I totally get it” when you have a kid home sick and you need to reschedule a call. Right? If you’re grappling with labels some people treat as weaknesses, maybe that’s a sign to wear that label loud and proud. I bet plenty of others see it as a strength. Hi Reader, The website world is full of jargon. If you’re trying to get a new website up and running, I don’t blame you if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Even just finding the right “type” of website team can be confusing, so I wanted to give you a little primer. Essentially, website teams usually land in one of two camps: Camp 1: Designers who build websites They typically lead with aesthetics, offer branding support, and create gorgeous-looking websites. That said, they tend to have less...
Hi Reader, The transition from holiday hibernation to the sprint of the new year never fails to amaze me. How are we already over a week into February?? It can be daunting to picture all the goals you have for the year when that sprint starts. Sometimes I feel like I’m grasping for a pause button as I start to wonder how we’ll ever make the time. When that feeling hits, the thing that keeps me grounded is remembering that we have core systems ticking along nicely in the background. I could...
