Going to El Salvador…again

Hi Reader,

I don’t know about you, but when I’m in my own little world for too long, my brain starts to overthink everything.

I get caught up in all the tasks I should be doing, or should be doing bigger and better.

When I finally step away from my comfort zone (i.e. my computer screen) for a while, the overthinking evaporates. I remember the world is, in fact, quite large. The opportunities are endless.

And, usually, unexpected.

That’s partly why Hazel and I went back to El Salvador in November, exactly a year after our last trip there.

When we went to El Salvador last fall, we were visiting one of the wonderful Professional Fellows we had just hosted in Baltimore, as part of the exchange program.

We ended up making many amazing connections, including Tomás, who we’ve decided to hire to help Drio with the new WholeSite project we have been working on.

Leading up to that first trip, people asked, “What’s the point of going all the way there? How is this tied into what you do?”

It’s a fair question. But I’ve always felt that we do things like this to figure out the point.

You don’t really know until you step off the plane.

It’s the act of getting out of your own little world and seeing where it leads you.

I definitely didn’t expect to hire someone in El Salvador, but I’m so glad we did.

So, this year, we visited Tomás to assist us in developing WholeSite and get our prototype up and running.

Yes, we could have done the work virtually with him. Tomás also could have come to Baltimore.

But Hazel and I decided to go to El Salvador again so we could get out of our normal day-to-day routine and give the project our full focus, fully immersed, rolling with whatever comes our way.

We had no clue where El Salvador would take us when we went last year, but it’s only expanded our opportunities. I’m excited to see where we end up this time around.

Whether you take a big trip or spontaneously join a local networking event, remember to get out of your world a few more times before the year wraps up. 🙂

To figuring out “the point” while you go,

Hi Reader, The website world is full of jargon. If you’re trying to get a new website up and running, I don’t blame you if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Even just finding the right “type” of website team can be confusing, so I wanted to give you a little primer. Essentially, website teams usually land in one of two camps: Camp 1: Designers who build websites They typically lead with aesthetics, offer branding support, and create gorgeous-looking websites. That said, they tend to have less...

Hi Reader, The transition from holiday hibernation to the sprint of the new year never fails to amaze me. How are we already over a week into February?? It can be daunting to picture all the goals you have for the year when that sprint starts. Sometimes I feel like I’m grasping for a pause button as I start to wonder how we’ll ever make the time. When that feeling hits, the thing that keeps me grounded is remembering that we have core systems ticking along nicely in the background. I could...
