Familiar enough not to panic

Hi Reader,

The transition from holiday hibernation to the sprint of the new year never fails to amaze me. How are we already over a week into February??

It can be daunting to picture all the goals you have for the year when that sprint starts. Sometimes I feel like I’m grasping for a pause button as I start to wonder how we’ll ever make the time.

When that feeling hits, the thing that keeps me grounded is remembering that we have core systems ticking along nicely in the background.

I could pause and catch my breath…and then start chasing again when I’m ready.

Because let me tell you, Rachel and I enjoy “the chase.” We love going after ambitious goals, whether it’s an MBA, big RFPs, a conference, or exciting new speaking opportunities.

Or, you know, another trip to Word Camp Europe.

At the end of the day, though, “the chase” only feels right when stability is backing us up.

That’s where those background systems come into play. The key is having a routine, and then layering on top of it.

It’s like my morning coffee. I always grab my favorite mug and pour myself the same base. Then I can add some flair.

Some days, it’s a splash of oat milk. Other days, I mix it up with cinnamon, vanilla, or a little extra foam. I don’t have to reinvent coffee, but I can try new things.

When you have one less big decision to make, you have more room to get creative. Your systems give you extra space to stretch.

A well-built marketing strategy anchored around your website can be one of those systems. It attracts the right clients even when you’re offline. With an intentional marketing plan in place, you can make fewer week-to-week decisions that distract you from the bigger picture.

When you’ve built systems you trust, things keep moving in the background even when you’re chasing your next big break. The recipe is familiar enough not to panic, but flexible enough to let curiosity in.

So do your website and marketing strategy have you covered?

If not, let’s talk about a refresh.

To pacing ourselves,

Hi Reader, I’ve been thinking a lot about the story of Pablo Picasso and the napkin sketch lately. As legend has it, a woman was walking by a Parisian cafe one day, when she spotted Picasso drawing on a napkin. She was a big fan, so she walked up to the famous painter and asked if she could buy the sketch. Picasso responded with, “Yes, that will be 1,000,000 Francs.” The woman was surprised because she had just seen how quickly Picasso had created the drawing. It couldn’t have been more than...

Hi Reader, Our International Women’s Soiree isn’t a big money-maker, but that was never the goal. Even though it’s always a lot of work, Hazel and I keep running the event because it keeps us connected to the bigger picture and why we started Drio in the first place. Plus, it’s a blast. Each time we run it, I can expect our wonderful keynote speakers will light us up with their words of wisdom, and that I’ll have fun connecting with new and familiar faces. Each year also always brings an...

Hi Reader, I’m about to start the last class of my MBA. It’s crazy to think that, 21 months after it all kicked off, I’ll officially be graduated in May. As I’m gearing up for the last push, I’ve been thinking about the tennis player, Mirra Andreeva. There’s this thing she does when she wins a tournament that I never see anyone else do. First, she thanks her family, coaches, and opponents. Then she thanks herself. Here’s a snippet from that speech: “I know what I have been dealing with, and I...
