Who said we were too small?

Hi Reader,

Sometimes, you lose out on work because your team isn’t big enough, and that can sting.

It’s happened to us at Drio. The truth is, we’re not a massive agency. We don’t have a dozen project managers and a team that works around the clock.

Sure, some organizations benefit from that kind of scaled support.

But then there are other organizations, even large ones, who see the value in hiring a smaller team.

Organizations like United Way of Central Maryland.

United Way came to us because they needed better control of their website. As a large nonprofit, they’re constantly balancing multiple initiatives and updates that their site should reflect.

They wanted something that their internal team (of non-web developers) could easily maintain, while still handling the complexity of their organization.

So they brought us in to smooth things out.

Instead of our small size scaring them off, it helped seal the deal.

They recognized that a smaller team can be more nimble and understand their goals on a deeper level. After all, they aren’t one of a hundred accounts on a roster.

Not to mention, they simply value working with small, local, women- and minority-owned businesses. When they talk about investing in the community, they truly live it!

And so, a website project has turned into a partnership that means a lot to all of us.

Hazel is involved in the higher-level strategy. I keep the security and accessibility in check. Justyne makes sure every task is completed on time, coordinating with United Way’s marketing team.

As one of their team members, Renee, put it, “Even if we can do more internally now, we’re still keeping you as a partner because of the value and results Drio provides.”

Best of all, we’ve built relationships with one another. We’re working together on something that has an impact on the local community.

You don’t have to be big to make a difference.

And if you’re too small for someone, that means you’re just right for someone else.

Lean into it.

If you know a non-profit organization that values working with small businesses, let me know! We love connecting with others who share our values.

Hi Reader, Rachel and I recently went to a presentation for international exchange alumni (because of our Professional Fellows experience). During the event, one of the presenters shared how he’s now working with a peacebuilding organization called Mediators Beyond Borders. You know I’m all about a good analogy, and I absolutely loved the one he referenced. He described peacebuilding as similar to the Japanese art form kintsugi, which is done by repairing broken pottery using a gold substance...
