Seeing Baltimore through fresh eyes

Hi Reader,

A few weeks ago, our Project Manager, Justyne, visited Hazel and me here in Baltimore.

When Justyne came to visit, we explained that Baltimore feels like a small town, even though more than 570,000 people live in the city. Many of us have been here for decades, if not generations, so it often seems like everyone knows each other. There’s a reason one of the city’s nicknames is “Small-timore.”

She quickly saw what we meant. On the drive back from the airport, she spotted a sign with the name of one of our potential website clients.

“Oh, I know them!” she said. “I was emailing them the other week.”

That proceeded with me pointing out several more clients’ billboards and offices just on that first drive alone. Over the next few days, she kept spotting familiar client and collaborator names.

We didn’t even mean for that to happen! It’s kind of just how it goes when Hazel and I move around town.

Once we came to the end of Justyne’s trip, Hazel suggested we make one last stop for dessert on the way back to the airport.

“One of the vendors at our International Women’s Day event owns a chocolate and toffee shop,” Hazel said. “She told me to swing by any time.”

Obviously, Justyne and I were up for that.

We popped in, and there she was, smiling over a fresh batch of toffee. We introduced her to Justyne and had a great conversation, chatting about opportunities to collaborate and support each other.

It was yet another moment for Justyne to see how important our local connections are for our business. These candid conversations happen all the time for Hazel and me, but it was cool for someone else on our team to witness it firsthand.

It reminded me how special it is to have people like that in your community, rooting for you and saying your name when you’re not in the room.

Baltimore may be “small,” but it’s a big part of Drio.

Do you have a lot of local connections in your business? Or do you mostly work with clients outside your hometown? I’d be curious to know!

Small-timore for life,

Rachel

Hi Reader, June was a big month for learning, connecting, and keeping an eye on what is next in the world of WordPress. From Hazel and Rachel attending WordCamp Europe in Kraków to our team monitoring upcoming WordPress Core updates, we are continuing to stay plugged into the tools and trends that help us better support our clients and their websites. 🌍 WordCamp Europe 2026 This June, Hazel and Rachel headed to Kraków, Poland for WordCamp Europe 2026, one of the largest gatherings of the...

Hi Reader, A few weeks ago, some of our servers were hacked. The days that followed were pretty intense (think late nights, heads down and dedicated to a quick clean-up). This was the second security incident we experienced in the past year (the one before that had been at least 10 years ago). When that last incident happened, we had put in additional safeguards, so our immediate priority was understanding how it could have happened again. Hazel and I leaped into action as soon as we caught...

Hi Reader, Phone calls are my love language. I know. In a world powered by texts and emails, that might be an unpopular opinion. Sure, you can always have too much of a good thing, but there’s a reason why my catch phrase is still “just call me.” Whether we worked together 3 days ago or 3 years ago, if something comes up, a quick call is the best way for us to get to the bottom of things. I can collect the context I need (without needing a massive email chain) and point you in the right...
