A bad AI website vs. a good one

Hi Reader,

I don’t usually work late, but when I do, it’s because I’m fully immersed in something, head down, earbuds in.

Recently, I was up late working on WholeSite, the AI-assisted website building tool we’re developing.

When I finally came home, I asked my husband if he wanted to see what I had been doing. I hadn’t actually told him much about WholeSite yet, so I gave him the spiel.

I told him WholeSite will allow entrepreneurs to create a high-quality WordPress website on their own. It gives them a backend that’s tested, accessible, and ready for SEO, as opposed to the (shaky) website anyone can quickly spin up with generic AI.

“That’s great because then they’re not just using some crappy bot to build their website,” he said before continuing to rant. “There are these AI posters at my golf course, and you can just immediately tell someone who didn’t know what they’re doing slapped them together!”

I laughed. “Exactly!”

AI has been and continues to be a game-changer in the way we work at Drio. But it’s a starting point, not a finished product.

There’s a huge difference between the type of AI websites any person can put together with a few prompts and one that’s guided by 15 years of experience building websites.

Just like with any craft, there are so many technical elements of a website that most businesses, organizations, and even small governments aren’t aware of.

And why should they be? They have their own expertise to obsess over!

To name a few…

  • WordPress security and updates to help fend off hackers
  • Hosting and server quality
  • Responsive design and mobile optimization
  • Cookie consent and privacy policies
  • Search engine optimization and AI search
  • Site performance and speed
  • Content structure and organization

Not to mention visual design. Just like with my husband’s golf flyers, there’s now an “AI look” that even non-design people can spot at a glance.

Believe me. There are countless tools out there promising to optimize your website, but many are gimmicks and sifting through them can be an expensive headache.

That’s why, with WholeSite, we’re injecting our expertise at every layer. It gives entrepreneurs a base they can trust. Then they can take the reins and DIY their site with confidence.

While generic AI can quickly generate a website, it can’t check all those performance boxes unless it’s guided by people who know what they’re doing and WHY.

People who’ve spent late nights obsessing and gushing to their husbands about it. 😉

Have you tried using AI to work on your website and, if so, how did it go? Or are there any AI website/design quirks you’ve noticed a lot? Reply and let me know what comes to mind!

Hi Reader, Walking into WordCamp Europe this summer felt like walking into high school as seniors. As usual, we knew many of the faces in the room, and we had experience on our side. The city was new (Kraków, Poland), but the energy was delightfully familiar. It’s like coming home to a community we’ve been with since freshman year. When you’re one of the “seniors,” you have wisdom to share with others who are earlier in their journey. We always love meeting people who are newer to the...
